A lot of manufacturers offer hybrid cars and Volvo plans to introduce V60 Plug-in Hybrid to the Geneva Auto Show. The car is scheduled to hit the market in 2012, hopefully, before the end of the world.

The astonishing thing about V60 Hybrid is that the car is powered by diesel-electric system, instead of petrol-electric and the numbers are staggering - 1.9 liters per 100 km and CO2 emissions are below 50 g/km. Furthermore, it can run up to 50 km on electric power alone.

The hybrid system includes D5 2.4 liter five-cylinder diesel engine with 215PS (158 kW) and 440Nm of torque. This power unit will deliver the power to the front wheels. At the rear, there are an ERAD (Electric Rear Axle Drive) electric motor with 70 kW powered by a 12 kWh lit-ion battery pack. Gearbox is a 6-speed automatic.

"This second-generation hybrid is the perfect choice for the uncompromising buyer who wants a superbly carbon dioxide-lean car packed with driving pleasure," commented Volvo Cars CEO Stefan Jacoby in the press release.
