Mitsubishi has released full details about the 2014 Outlander PHEV, which according to them is a car with an impeccable pedigree. Thanks to years of research and a passion to create a car that can fulfil the promise of a true hybrid, the Outlander PHEV is the best 4x4 SUV PHEV available on the market.

The Outlander PHEV is the most practical vehicle that qualifies for the Government's £5,000 Plug-in Car Grant (P-iCG) with five seats, 4WD capability and a very large luggage compartment. The car is kind to the planet emitting just 44 g/km of CO2 which means that there is no Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) payable.

The pricing starts from £28,249 for the entry-level GX3hOutlander PHEV. There are two other Outlander PHEV variants: GX4h priced at £32,899 and GX4hs which is £34,999 (after the grant).

The drivetrain of Outlander PHEV includes a 2.0 liter petrol engine and two electric motors. Both of them has a maximum power of 82HP (60 kW) – each and maximum torques of 137Nm (102 lb-ft) at front and 195Nm (144 lb-ft) at rear axle.

The vehicle's unique combination of electric motors and a petrol engine give it amazing flexibility in optimising fuel efficiency and environmental performance whilst providing a cruising range of 824 km (512 miles). On electric power only, the Outlander PHEV can travel up to 52 km (32.5 miles). So, the consumption figure for PHEV is 148mpg UK – 1.9 liters / 100 km.

The Outlander PHEV has three drive modes: EV Drive Mode, Series Hybrid Mode and Parallel Hybrid Mode. The super-efficient SUV also comes with regenerative braking.

Storing the drive battery under the floor improves safety by lowering the centre of gravity and reducing roll movement, without affecting SUV functionality.
